History
Downtown Community Fellowship (DCF) is a story of a people seeking to journey into the reality of what it would mean to live as a true community, united by and passionate for the fame of God. So, our tale is really only a chapter, one chapter in the story of God.
DCF visibly entered God's stage in 1995 when a church planter, John Reeves, connected with a small and faith-filled band of Clemson and SWU students. They longed to create a safe place where their friends who were distanced from the Church could connect with God and his people. Meeting in a local bar, a church was planted, and a small, fledgling movement was born.
We have journeyed through many seasons, traveled many trails. Most often, we can barely see around the bend. We have weathered seasons of erupting growth and seasons of smaller and simpler times. We have sent out leaders to plant churches that have thrived and sent out leaders to plant churches that never quite got off the ground. We have enjoyed delightful blessing as well as sputtering mishaps.
However, it seems that in recent days, God is whispering new words, blowing fresh winds. God has stirred in us a deep yearning to simply be the church, without flash or fanfare, nurturing the simple realities of being a people consumed with the centrality of God.
Our heart is to live as a God-drenched community where we embrace our calling as a colony, incarnating Christ to our world. In an age when method and technique are idols, we have returned to the ancient, simple roots of the Christian Church. We love one another, gather together to worship and to eat, confess our bedrock faith in the triune God and his work in the world, and we embrace those who have been marginalized by the church and society. While still being a university church with a large student population, we are a church for all people and all ages, a community where we embrace our differences and learn to listen to one another's heart.
The Incarnation invites us to take risks and to redeem - rather than withdraw from - our culture. So, much of how we live as a Church is fresh and creative. Yet, the rich heritage of Christ's Church is part of our own story, and so much of how we live as a Church is deeply rooted in the history of those who have gone before us. We live in the paradox of God.
We invite you to join us, to live with us. There are many pages remaining to be written in our story. We believe God has a fresh quill and a full bottle of ink.
